Lockheed Martin breaks ground on Alabama missile plant.

Lockheed Martin broke ground on an 87,000-square-foot Munitions Production Center (Building 47) at its Troy, Alabama campus on May 21, 2026. The facility will nearly double the site’s manufacturing capacity to support Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors and Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) work.

Project Details

Location: Troy, Alabama (Pike County).

Facility Size: 87,000 square feet.

Missiles Supported: Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and Next Generation Interceptor (NGI).

Broader Investment: The plant is part of a broader company investment of more than ($9) billion through 2030 across more than 20 U.S. facilities.

Surging Demand: The expansion is a direct response to rising global demand for munitions and the need to replenish stockpiles used in recent allied defense operations.

Job Creation: The expansion is expected to create a significant number of new American jobs over the next three years, supplementing the nearly 4,000 Lockheed Martin employees already working in Alabama.

Procurement Shifts: Long-term framework contracts, including a recent deal to quadruple THAAD interceptor production to 400 units annually, have enabled Lockheed to confidently invest heavily in scaling infrastructure.
