The Maryland Public Service Commission lifted its temporary collections and shut-off moratorium, meaning Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) will resume termination notices and service disconnections for past-due balances starting July 15. The state paused shut-offs last winter following severe customer service and call center delays.
If you are facing a potential service cutoff, you must take immediate action to protect your power. Here is what you need to know and how to act fast:
1. Request Payment Arrangements
You may be eligible to break up your past-due balance into manageable monthly installments. Contact the BGE Customer Service at 1-800-685-0123 immediately to discuss a specialized payment plan.
2. Apply for State & Federal Energy Assistance
If you are behind on your bills, the state of Maryland offers significant relief options:
- Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP): Provides financial assistance to help low-income households with heating bills.
- Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP): Offers assistance to help cover a portion of your electric bill.
- How to apply: Submit an application online or find local intake offices via the Maryland Department of Human Services Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP).
3. Seek Local & Charity Grants
If you don’t qualify for government help or need a rapid short-term fix, private and local funds are available:
- Fuel Fund of Maryland: If you are a BGE residential customer struggling to pay your bill, the Fuel Fund of Maryland provides financial grants up to help keep your household connected.
- BGE Customer Relief Fund: Eligible residential customers with past-due balances can secure grants ranging from $250 to $750. Check your eligibility and apply at BGE Customer Relief.
